Who makes MFI's kitchen worktops?

I am so annoyed because I think I may have to compromise our new kitchen because MFI cannot supply kitchen worktops in lengths greater than 3m.

I have just today ordered one of MFI's top of the range sinks, a Franke Divida in Slate Grey (a colour only available through MFI), and today went back to MFI to assess which worktop would look best with it. The idea to have a black / dark grey worktop to blend in with the dark sink and flush fitting ceramic hob.

To our amazement the MFI Black Ebony Style worktop is an exact match for the sink, so much so that to two will look as one. Very nice thought 'err indoors. However the new kitchen needs a continuous run of worktop of 3.1m and any joint along a continues length would look awful. BUT the MFI muppet was adamant that 3m is the maximum length available, and even a special order cannot be considered.

So does anyone know who manufactures worktops for MFI, and I can then make a vain attempt to talk to the manufacturer directly.

Any help advice or information gratefully received, as I'm so pee'd off that I have to compromise the kitchen, by either scraping two new Ikea cabinets in lieu of 10cm shorter ones and upsetting the symmetry of the kitchen or having a different, less visually appealing worktop.

Try a laminate specialist (yellow pages), we have one locally who makes up

*anything* to order. I've just ordered a very strage angled and shaped piece along with some normal lengths and they were happy to do it, a a price :-(

This manufacturer does worktop in 3.6 metre lengths, but I don't know if they do your pattern/design. They have a couple of ebony designs though.

Jaybee, please tell......who is the manufacturer,. are they UK based, etc etc, this is getting a desperate situation, I'm even contenplating whether joints in the middle / either side of the hob would look acceptable. I am prepared to pay a premium price for the right worktop.

Desperate Duncan ;-)

May be Profile Laminators Ltd Sheffield. I'd like to know if I guessed right.

Search for V Audritt & go from there for a contact.

Can't promise, but there is a company in New Haw, Weybridge, Surrey - they are very coy about advertising, etc. about what they do - so, one is led to think they do not need to advertise - they get enough business from their commercial (wholesale) customers (MFI etc, perhaps) called Stantons (Weybridge) Ltd., Canal Brige, Byfleet Road, Weybridge - (01932 -I think-848131) - they supplied us with 4m cut to size with routed joins for our DIY kitchen 20 years ago and they are still there. They are seriously secretive - so don't tell them I sent you! :-}}

I believe Howdens Joinery (part of MFI Group) make kitchens for MFI so your local branch could be worth a try. (Not sure if they make the worktops though)

As an alternative to tracking down this specific worktop, it may be worthwhile trying a laminates /worktop specialists merchant.

We got our kitchen worktop from a company in Leeds who basically just sell chipboards, worktops etc. they had a very wide range of finishes to choose from, many more thn the averge kitchen merchant.

I'm sure most areas have something similar.

I don't know the name of the company, but there's a place in Miles Gray Rd in Basildon that supplied a 4m length of a worktop that Wickes only had in 3m lengths. I think the same worktop is also in MFI.

When we bought our units at MFI, the salesman pointed out we could get the same worktops cheaper at Wickes/B&Q... which we did.

Don't know whether they stock the ones you're after but you should find a label inside the shrink-wrap with the manufacturer's contact details.

MFI worktops are 616mm wide, most are 600

There are several makers of worktops either 3.6 or 4.1 metres long,

Try looking for specialist worktops shops rather than sheds.

A bit of a pain, but can you go back to the MFI showroom, open a base unit and have a look on the underside of the worktops. You may have to look in a few displays but sometimes the manufacturers print their name on the underside, take a torch as they are not always in the easiest place to see! Failing that try a Google on the EXACT name of the worktop.

Sorry Duncan - I can't answer you I'm afraid. I found the link in my husband's favourites folder from a while ago, when he was looking for a particular pattern.

My mum's worktops came from there a few years back and I'll be ordering mine in a few weeks. They have the most unbelievable range of colours and options so you either need to know exactly what you want or allow lots of time to choose.

It's at times like this that a digital camera can pay dividends. Just open the door, poke the camera in, take a snap, etc.

Then if all goes well you can review any printed details at your leisure.

I take a digital camera with me when I'm speccing jobs. The photos can be a godsend after you've left site and overlooked something.

As I recall there is no ID on the underside of the board except MFI's own code number

The wrapper is thin plastic & had no markings.

Maybe a sticker saying it is heavy.

When I was looking for a cheaper alternative to a MFI supplied surface I was told by a kitchen installer recently that Howdens in Shrewsbury supply surfaces & kitchens to MFI. Their telephone number is 01743 460067. Dunno if they are based anywhere else though.

Can't really promise, BUT try talking to MFI again - many "3m" lengths of worktop come oversixed, coincidentally by about 100mm. You may be lucky....

There are only a couple of large manufacturers - B&Q for instance are supplied by the Bernstein Group. If you try talking direct, I shouldn't think you'll get very far! As suggested, look around.

It's possible that a kitchen designer may be able to suggest some sort of "feature" which you could add to give the top a little more effective length.

Sorry. MFI manufacture their own worktops at their factory in Howden, Humberside. Howdens depots are the trade subsidiary of MFI. They get their stock from the same source.
