Washing - hanging out or in?

It was one of the many mistakes they made with the schedule at the time and have yet to rectify.

Another mistake was to try and fit nearly all programmes into multiples of 30 minutes. It was far better to give them the time they needed. Dumbing down to multiples of 30 minutes has not helped the standard of programmes at all.

I agree 100%. In fact most programmes aren't even 30 minutes, what with trailers, news, weather, other announcements ...

When they tried an open ended programme experiment it didn't work and was dropped in a very short time.

I iron boxers, socks, pillow cases, towels.... :-)

No boxers live here, I wouldn't want to approach one with a hot iron ...

Don't wear socks and wouldn't iron them anyway.

Pillow cases and sheets are a must, it's wonderful to slide into cool, shiny, freshly ironed bed linen - oh bliss :-)

Towels??? I wouldn't consider that, a good shake is all they need. Smooth linen glass towels are better if ironed.

Spouse once spent ages trying to smooth a linen towel to make it flat. I wan't pleased, it was huckaback!

Reminds me of a younger cousin, an au pair girl and a Krazy Straw.

"Look Claude, I have straightened it out for you..."

I don't know what a Krazy Straw is but I can guess :-)

I remember someone on R4 saying the largest number of complaints about the demise of Listen with Mother was from truck drivers. Apparently a lot of them used to listen so they had something to talk to their kids about when they got home.

The only person I've ever known who had a good excuse for such madness lived in Africa and reckoned it was the best way to kill the various life forms that got washed in with the river water.

What's a huckaback?

Listen with Mother was a sad deletion :-(

Our children loved it. And yes, I did tell them stories and for an hour each night read to them as well, but it made them think that radio was not just for me.

My own radio listening (Home Service) was encouraged by Children's Hour and the Monday Night Play. And, of course, PC49 ... ... they don't make them like they used to ... ... and yet many of the programmes we loved, if we hear their repeats, are unbelievably trite.

Not all.

Huckaback is a three dimensional surface to a linen or cotton weave, especially used for towels so that there's more linen to absorb water in a given area. It's not looped like 'terry' towelling.

It was used before looping was developed, we use it as towelling for period personal and dish drying.

LOL! I thought laundering was supposed to get rid of such life forms!

Why would you wear socks in Africa ... ?

Mine was Book at Bedtime. I remember Les Miserables when I was in my early teens. Great stuff.

I wasn't allowed to stay up that late in my early teens. I suspect that my parents were also in bed by Book at Bedtime.

There are some cracking choices though, aren't there!

Is there a Nostaligia ng?

There should be, it would keep us off the streets or away from mucky women for years!

But it wouldn't be what it used to be :-(

Neither was I! Small radio, under the blankets, turned very low.

It was part of the School uniform. I can remember the furore when certain Civil Servants were permitted to do without their ties in October. Ah those were the days, but as you say Mary nostalgia is not what it used to be.
