Vokera 'Compact' Combi ?

A neighbour has a Vokera 'Compact' combi boiler. It isn't a condensing boiler.

On Christmas Eve it stopped working. He asked me to have a look at the water pressure because the needle was at zero and he couldn't fill it up.

On checking, I think the needle was stuck becuase about a 1 second blast shot the needle right up the scale.

Switched to hot water only, turned the tap on and the boiler fired up for about 40 seconds then went off again. Repeated this a few times with same effect.

Waited about 5 mins and switched it to heating and water. Switched the time onto manual and the boiler fired up for about 40seconds and went off again.

He told me that he had had the same problem last year and it cost him about £75 to have repaired.

Just oput of curiousity, would anyone like to offer a comment as to what the trouble might be please and do you think it would be better under the circumstances to get it changed to a Baxi. He inherited the Vokera from the previous occupier and it was fitted by a cowboy under the care and repair scheme.

Must admist, I don't like the boiler at all, I much prefer a Baxi 105HE.

Most likely, the expansion vessel isn't working, so there's nothing to take up the expansion of the water when it's heated. See the sealed system FAQ

Seems rather extreme just for a failed expansion vessel.

The problem with the Vokera turned out to be a faulty board. Trouble is the Gas engineer is unable to fix it now due to adverse weather conditions. Can't move on our street or the estate and the council won't even send us a plough down, let alone a grit lorry
