virginmedia news access totally bolloxed

don't know if anyone will see this, no new posts in this group for the past

26 hours according to my server, which I find hard to believe, although uk.legal seems to be getting the odd 1 here and there (about 10 since midnight friday) - none of my oher (46) groups are showing anything new.

If you are seeing a lot of weird posts, it's because all of us on virgin can post but not see the posts, nor any replies, nor any new posts from anywhere else.

No doubt they'll blame it all on the cold weather

Demon (Thus/C&W) are having the same problem, ie non-delivery of news in certain (if not most) newsgroups. I believe they use the same server as Virgin. Can you switch to a different server? I'm using my 'backup', Eternal September.

I've just registered with news.eternal-september.org, and they seem to be working rather better.

The ones that are free and really easy to sign up to tend to get used for spamming in rotation. As a result you may find that people who know how have kill-filed all posts from them. For long term use, one that you have to pay a small fee to might be better eg:

formatting link
as they don't tend to be associated with spamming.

You mean at the ISP end? If so, then Demon/Thus/C&W have suddenly decided not to carry the majority of my chosen NGs on their server. And from today's postings in the Demon.Service NG, it appears I'm not the only one affected. I doubt if they all share my preference in NGs. As, in the past week, Demon have already had another NG server problem, it could be that this is associated with it. Maybe they are still tinkering!

No, I was meaning user filtering so not the cause of your problem. I was suggesting avoiding certain free alternate usenet providers to avoid the risk of users blocking your posts.

Although some providers may aggressively filter posts I wouldn't be too quick to discount simple incompetence on the part of the provider as your problem.

I don't know if Virgin's servers are in-house or subbed out but in-house ones are frequently neglected and prone to such problems.

At the moment, it seems that Virgin are coping with outgoing posts, but not retrieving them.

Highwinds apparently provide (or occasionally don't) the service.

Agent allows me to specify Virgin as the primary option, but to then use eternal september if it is unavailable.

Those who are interested can no doubt work out from the headers what route this post has taken.
