VCR to DVD

Any experiences with a USB connected device to connect to the old VCR to allow me to create DVDs? Any recommendations?

Yes.

Pinnacle Dazzle. I bought one from eBay.

You can buy these with various DVD write software applications. I have used use "Pinnacle Studio" (purchased separately) to edit old videos and movies to PC files and/or DVD.

The Dazzle interface does what it says on the tin, presenting the VCR to the PC as if it was a camera.

I guess you could use this with Windows Movie Maker to edit and make DVD's as well.

I'm sure it can be done using a dvd recorder if that suits you instead..I think it would be a lot simpler and give you better results .

Dazzle DVD Recorder is 39 quid in PC World.

The results from Dazzle (a USB device) are superb. I have tried connecting a VCR to a recordable DVD via SCART and the results were nowhere near as good.

There's a more expensive Dazzle with some good video editing software which helps create better DVDs. The picture quality is identical but there is better management and more control of chapters, etc.

I've certainly done it that way without problems. Basic though - simply switching on the VCR, then hitting the DVD recorder's record and stop buttons as I see fit: ie, no pretty front end menu on the DVD or editing of the video, both of which are possible (if required) if you do it via a PC.
