It was a small water heater, 12 US gallons.

Yes, a while back I posted a report where a badly designed and installed water heater exploded on a fishing boat, sinking the vessel. According to the MAIB calculations, they reckon the cylinder was doing about 500mph when it exited the hull!

There's still a lot to be said for the power of steam. :-) LOL

I recall from around thirty years ago seeing a training film of electrical explosions. One of an oil filled HV breaker detonating when it had moisture contamination of its oil fill and another one showed 132,000 volt grid busbars lashing about under fault currents with an increasing amplitude until they touched and exploded in a cloud of vapourised metal. Much more impressive than the film of an lpg bulk tank in a fire where its safety valve operated and shot a flame about fifty feet upwards until the tank was empty. Both films certainly taught respect for the subjects Safety with steam boilers has improved over the last thirty years too. You no longer hear of tubeplates rupturing and the boiler leaping out of the boilerhouse through the wall into the yard next door like in t'good old days
