Just went to B&Q to get a replacement diaphragm, and just where you expect the little hole to be, is a sticking-up bit of plastic. Do I just snip it off?

No, take it back.
You're absolutely right! Just had a plmber in to quote for a gas fire, and he indicated that there are as many variations in the diaphragm design as there are opinions about what is good for the country in today's elections!
