Timber shed or office or garage near boundary (<1m) ... interesting conversation

Re large timber shed or office or garage near boundary (1m rule) ...

Had an interesting conversation with an unusually sensible (rather than the ir more usual hysterical crowd) senior manager at Zurich.

It is quite acceptable to paint such buildings in fire retardant coatings ( paint for want of a better word), in terms of compliance with BR. This migh t be more attractive than the usual cement board cladding (another common s olution), although I can see maintenance potentially being more tedious (& costly).

I do not ever remember anyone suggesting it, so might be of use to someone. Existing coatings of course may preclude its use, manufacturers instructio ns apply.

Aside: UK.D-I-Y Wiring Reg FAQ on min bending radius for FTE needs to have a comment about checking cable manufacturers instructions (MI), because qui te a few say 4x minor axis on min bending radius (Prysmian for one). There are other standards too, BS7540-1 Section 5.6.3 Table 2 states, Cables diam eter 8 12mm bend radii 6D. Definition of D = the overal diamet er of round cable or the smaller dimension of flat cables. So by BS7540-1 t he min bending radius becomes 21.6mm which is not a mile away from the Prys mian 4D figure.

Yup the existing comment could be given more prominence and made more general.

Interesting, tat puts it in disagreement with Table 4E of the 17th edition OSG. Do you have a copy of BS7650 in PDF you could email me - it seems to be one missing from my collection.

Too busy right now, I'm afraid, just stumbled in to uk.d-i-y :-)

Do a Google for exactly the following... BS7540-1 Section 5.6.3

The URL that comes up is very long to a PDF which has Chinese characters in it, so it may vanish as soon as it appears if a lot of people access it. I t appears to be the complete PDF without a large price tag attached :-)

Basically MI for Prysmian is 4D where D is the minor axis, and I think that holds true for 6242Y and 6242B. Quite a few people moving to BS8436 it app ears re nail plates vs nail guns if installing 6242B because there is not a huge difference in price between branded 6242B and BS8436.

I prefer bending on the minor axis on FTE, never doing a "pretty" flat bend , because I can feel the cable stress re one conductor describing a larger radius.

Its pricey stuff though.
