timber rot question

My roof timbers have quite a lot of soft white deposits on them, very similar to the gypsum/salts often seen on brickwork. The house is a semi, probably 1930's the loft area is draughty & dry & the roof tiles were probably replaced 15 years ago, (i've owned it for a couple of years)

Are the white deposits likely to be anything serious or is this common?

Thanks DD

If they are simply the dusty white type then dont worry, rub them off with an old sack or something but take a good peek to see if there are any little holes nearby
