Thunderbird Changes...

Am now getting the Reply is reply to person; Followup is reply to group. Damn them.

Caught me out a couple(?) of weeks back.

Why they've changed it I don't know.

They never did get this right. Whats up with them, its also triggering several events for screenreaders when you open a message with the result that the subject is spoken three times... grr.

Must be a right pain. I used to work with someone who used a little camera and vibrating pattern device to read the screen. The huge asset he had was that was on a green screen and many of the layouts were highly consistent.

It would also be really nice to have a UK English spelling checker... I have read what is required to change an older one to work, but why is there not one? Could it not use the Firefox one?

I use the 'British English Dictionary 1.19.1' at

formatting link
with Thunderbird 16.0.1.

When I add that, it does not become an option. Thought it did not work above release 15?

I have 16.0.1 and the British English dictionary works fine on mine. Colour or color. Yep, picks up the British spelling as correct and the American as incorrect.

If I click on Add-ons it's there, and there is an option to remove it. It also underlines tryping (it picked that one up) errors.

Have you gone to Tools > Options > Composition > Spelling tab and checked that both boxes are ticked?

Certainly have. I can get Australian, Canadian & US English to work without any problems. I can follow the link from earlier and download UK English no problem. Even restarts OK.

But I cannot select UK English from the dialogue box - only switch between the other three variants.

Maybe it was already installed and active for you before you upgraded to

16.0.1?

It was, yes.

Install an earlier version of Thunderbird and then update? Not exactly elegant but it might get you what you want...

I too have been caught out. I got quite an irritable email from the person to whom I had replied. I must say I did not think many peeps actually used their genuine email addresses in groups. Also I thought I would try to rearrange the options at the bottom of the page so that Followup was in front of Reply, but all I could do was delete Reply, which was not what I wanted.

If I have inadvertently emailed anyone, I apologise. But it's hardly a hanging offence - I'd only be annoyed if someone keeps on doing it.

Last week I had an e-mail from someone in this group. It was obviuously a reply to the group but I would have thought that my addy would need editing before the path is valid.

Is it not just fixing something they 'accidentally' wrongly switched a couple of changes ago? They now have it right (well, it's the same as my news client 'Turnpike' has always been).

How do you hang someone in a non-binary newsgroup?

No. I've been using TB since the very early versions and I don't remember the reply button doing anything other than replying to the newsgroup prior to a few weeks ago.

I'm still using v2.0.0.23 at work, so I took a look at the newsgroup behaviour in that just to check my memory. Sure enough, the reply button replies to group.

If it had been like it from day one then I think there might be a good argument for saying that it's not wrong.

But it hasn't, and to make a major change like this to something that users have been used to for many years, without requiring users to change a setting somewhere to enable the new behaviour, is very sloppy programming IMHO.

Not programming, design. I suspect what happened is somebody got all pedantic, and too many pedantic people agreed and not enough sane people were there to argue for the status quo. The joys of a project led by programmers - it's one of the failings of open source. Any closed-source product would have had the business side saying "No, changing that is just dim, live with it".

Still, it remains a pretty good product, and generally speaking a good example of how open source can work.
