Web sites being parasites basically - take free content from usenet, blend in some adverts, and hope that enough people who think the web

*is* the internet will use them ...

and you can read this one:

Just another web layer on top of usenet.

Think of it as either a service to users without news server access, or a bunch of chancers looking for oodles for free content to drive searchers toward their ads (assuming they have some - can't tell running adblock!)

You want to see the commercial sites out that that have lifted content from our wiki and posted it complete with pictures and then slapped their copyright on top!

Indeed. @diy_forum being another.

Any mileage in a 'uk.d-i-y' "watermark" at least on jpgs?

would the wider populace know what to do with it even if curious?

Some of the ones pilfered already had a visible copyright in the image - that was left in on the infringing site!

e.g try this bunch of chancers:

I like the bit about employing professionals at the bottom of the page!

Put stuff in Public Domain and you can expect this.

The Harry Potter books are in the public domain in as much as they are published, but that doesn't mean I can put a new cover on them and sell them as the Larry Trotter novels as my own work...

If you think that anything you post on the public internet is secure, then you are expecting far too much. Post it in public and public will take it.

I wrote a large article for UK Selfbuid .. and found it recreated word for word on a Plumbing companies web site as their guide ... it happens.

Well crossposting to up to three groups is quite common on Usenet, if this happens after the start of a thread then the origninal post is only preserved in quotes. Brian

Well, u thiey can do as they like, but if there is no way p back to the original poster to see it, then they are in effect shooting themselves in the foot. Brian

Yes indeed. I was involved in a thread on a group about web creation using flash and how to make it accessible. Part of my post was reposted as a quote on a web site out of context which effectively got me into trouble with a lady whose husband was a web developer and she refused to ever talk to me again, even though, if she had read the original, it would not have caused any problems. so not only do people nick stuff, but some people, like relatives of those in the know, who don't know, shall we say, their web site from their arses, get others into trouble as well. One just develops an asbestos skin in the end.

No matter how idiot proff a thing is another better idiot comes along to screw you up. Brian

Some certainly feed posts from the site back to usenet - hence the diybanter posters visible here from time to time...

Who holds the copywrite on those images? Someone here created them I presume?

Assuming they've not been released as available to use, maybe the copywrite holder could drop them an email complaining... be interesting to hear their response.

I can't see it either - maybe they've corrected it, or maybe (sic) isn't . All I noticed is "explination" [sic] under the "Cables" title.
