This week's DIY

FWIW, while Firth is, and always has been, a tiresomely argumentative sod on Usenet, his actual "content" posts are usually interesting and, if nothing else, well written. Many have queried the voracity of his exploits but there are people out there who have a knack for getting on and getting a lot done.

Anyway, the point is this, by comparison all we've had from you is some "that's bollocks" posts. Standard Usenet tedium and not exactly adding to the sum total of human knowledge. Why not author a piece or two of your own? You must have some practical interest in DIY or you'd not be here and, from your posting style, you're far from stupid so must have something to contribute.

Voracity eh? That's a good one :-)

I claim, erm, American spelling.

Bugger, yes. Veracity. D'oh.

voracity - voracious - perfectly reasonable word - depends on what you are eating.

I love it when typos are apt.

elf-admiration.

Splendid, I shall endeavour to ignore him.

Simply not so, as a brief scroll through my contributions could show you.

My MO is that I generally read some posts and stick in a comment where, IM HO, I have something to add and know something about the topic.

Stuff I happen to know about is plumbing, gas, solid fuel, ventilation, co mpressed air, HVAC controls, water supply, pumps, etc.. A random and limite d assortment such as one might collect during a career.

Problems arise when my opinion is perceived as contradicting that of some of the self-styled experts that congregate here.

For example, NT is a regular purveyor of bollocks; previous gems include cross-flow air heat exchangers are really easy to ma ke (oh dear), pump P v Q graphs are a straight line (universally referred to as pump cur ves, for some reason), and (the current one) stuffing metal scourers into a compressor outlet.

My original contribution on that post was a link (I though useful) a menti on of hygroscopic oils and later a mention of water vapour in compressed ai r.

Other memorable ones included; the bloke who suggested putting hit & miss ventilators on a solid fuel appliance fixed ventilation to stop draughts (scoring 20 on the stupid scale of 0 to 10, stupid beyond belief) and the one about a conchoidal fracture in a window in which someone repeat edly asserted a firearm was involved so he could drop in a mention of knowi ng something about firearms, having apparently banged off a few .303 rounds in the cadets. I hope you were all as impressed by that as he hoped you'd be.

I might do that. I am disturbed by many rip-offs in the UK that are going o n in areas where I have some expertise. For example, chemical water treatment and power flushing. Compare UK and French plumbing (steel rads, copper pipes, much the same) and the UK & Fren ch power flushing industries (there isn't one). Pouquoi? I know.

However, it won't be on here. NT seems to be established as the editor of the wiki thing and I won't be challenging his opinions. I really can't be a rsed.

I stick in a post on something I know about and get verbally assaulted by tossers. It's wearying.

My apologies; I'd not spotted you before the 'One for ARW' thread.

Uncommonly civil of you, sir. Thanks.

Sounds like it's not the place for you then?

Most respect on here is based on reputation, usually earned on here (as most posters are anonymous & ultimately could pretend to be anyone & anything).

You appear to be demanding respect for your opinions whilst remaining anonymous- which isn't really the way it appears to work?

Just my thoughts

Strange. I don't think I've demanded 'respect' from anyone. I intend to remain anonymous like a komuso. I don't see how a nameless poster will accumulate such 'respect'.

The disagreements arise when a post contradicts the resident 'experts', those who have 'respect', 'based on reputation' and 'usually earned on here'. Some know of what they speak, some are bullshit merchants. It is the 'experts' who get take umbrage, view a contrary opinion as undermining their status and start dishing out abuse.

Is this merely a group of experts, earning respect by handing out DIY advice in an authoritative manner, a percentage of which advice is bollocks?

Or a DIY discussion group, of diverse opinions?

As is fairly clear, it is what it is, if you can't handle/ don't like it then just stop bothering (& stropping) and go where you are made to feel more welcome?

Above all have fun!
