The longest diy build I now of

There's a bloke by me thats DIYing a 3 story detached victorian house(1880'ish) He's been at it since the 8 years I have been here in this locality and has been living in the caravan at the back of the property with his wife, dunno about kids because I've never seen any?

I suspect he's been doing it for a few years before I had knowledge of being in the area?

Anyone beat this? :-)

The message from "George" contains these words:

That lets me out as well then. Been here 30 years this October and I still haven't finished some of the jobs I started in the first 10 years.

We've been here since 1964 ... he still keeps reminding himself of the plans he had then - and intends doing them.

One day.

I think one of my mum's neighbours has been waiting for a utility room floor for about 27 years (and I mean a *floor*, the joists are down but the planks aren't, I don't mean just waiting for lino). Getting the lounge walls plastered (on bare breeze block) was also on the to do list last time I heard.

And this was just a join-the-garage-to-the-house and build a bit on the back extension.

It is indeed good news. I've just completed 7 out of our 11 rooms in the last 24 years. Who knows what secrets I might find in the other 4?

Great thread, guys. Quite relieving to find I am not alone.

How about expanding it a bit and asking why ? I've been here 30 years

- old stone cottage which required all the usual upgrades plus space redistribution. I have some new projects, like an extension to the workshop and a conservatory, but keep on realising that once something works I lose interest in it and the final details and decorating don't get done.

That wouldn't be in Inverkeithing would it? House with metal roller blinds over all the windows and has been in that state for about as long as I can remember.

Not uncommon, helps pay my wages. Swmbo ewentually gets completely cheesed off & employs someone like me.

Mind you, I'm much the same when it comes to finishing my own projects.

Don't eat your heart out over it.

It took Michaelangelo 4 years to paint the ceiling.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "George" saying something like:

Pah, the man is an amateur at it. I've been doing my building conversion for the last decade.

The usual.

When I'm doing stuff for other people during the week, I often cba filling the weekend with work on the building.

Actually, there has to be a confluence of several factors for anything to take place...

Inclination Materials Money Time Weather

Ocasionally they do all co-incide and something gets done. Another step forward. I'm resigned to the fact it'll never be finished, but sometime over the next two years I expect to get a major part done - the flooring of the huge open space and almost automatic creation of extra rooms thereby.
