Storage heaters - what rating

I'm trying to source some storage heaters for our offices.

From what I've learnt from the Dimplex site, the amount of heat required can be calculated based on the room area, number of outside walls and whether cavity filled walls or not. The amount of heat can then be translated into an Input Rating required from the storage heater.

I contacted an electrical contractor today and gave them the above details.

One of the rooms is 54sq metres with one hollow outside wall. They suggested an XL24 from the Dimplex range, but this only has an input rating of about 3kw. I have calculated that an input rating of 7kw is required to get the room up to 21c (Dimplex recommended).

Have I missed something?

No you haven't. A 3KW will not heat 54 sq m unless you have a celiling height of about 6". I gauge that as a 5x10m room, I have a 3.4kw in a 6x8m (48sqm) room and it barely takes the chill off it (the room as 3 internal walls and large single glazed windows at one end. You will need at least

2x3.4kw to be semi-comfortable... about £450 for both from wholsalers plus a couple of 7 day timers at £40 each. So expect to pay a spark about £1K all in.

Thanks Tony. It's a relief to know you've done something right, but exasperating to find that someone who works with storage heaters daily, can't work out what we need correctly.

I'd not considered 2x3.4kw units. I was looking at the Dimplex VFMi range which goes up to about 7kw and costs about £950. Suppose the cost's about the same, but would 2x3.4kw units be more efficient because they're spaced out?

I suppose two separate units would be more versatile when it gets to Spring, allowing one to be turned off as it gets warmer.

I've seen the VFMi range at an on-line shop, but are you saying that a local electrical wholesaler would deal with us? Would we be able to buy 3 cheaper than a single unit?

Most people just guess, and get it wrong.

Also means you don't lose all heat if one goes faulty and it's cheaper to replace one standard smaller unit than one large specialist one.

Yep, pop down your local wholesalers and see what they've got.

Agreed, try your local Denmans, they have their own range of heaters. I've put in about 15 so far this winter (2 yesterday) with no problems.

I've only ever fitted these second hand, when you buy them new do you get the case & the bricks in separate packages? Otherwise I would imagine they are immovable.
