SOT: Where do they get these people?

The local council have just started charging for certain types of recycling material. The leaflet provided states it must be in a bag no larger than 50cm x 77cm. That's not a bag, it's a rectangle! What's the other dimension? Does that mean I can use a bag 50 x 77 x 2 metres?!

Sounds like bag dimensions to me. 50 x 77 x 2 metres would be a rectangle.

Well I expect they mean a bag which is 50 x 77 when it is laid flat. Which almost all bags will do, although of course a supermarket re-usable bag with its fold-out bottom will give you more volume while meeting that criterion.

A rectangle is 2 dimensional not 3, 3 is least cuboid.

Yes I added box type to my following post.

What are these "certain types of recycling material"?

If it includes cookers and other white goods, you've got a problem.

Doesn't that mean that 99.9% of the population will just put it in with the general waste to go to landfill?

Several such items would fit in a bag 50 x 70 metres. Now, 50 x 70 cms would be a problem.

It's stuff classified as 'construction waste' even if it comes from modifications/renovations to your house or garden carried out via DIY, so if you knock a couple of bricks out to install a Ventaxia you have to put them in a bag and pay £4. If you transport loose material it's £50 per car load! Also car tyres are charged at £5 each (previously free).

I managed to get a washing machine and a cooker into our wheelie bin. Over a period of weeks, anyway.

Flytipping is the answer then, for many otherwise honest people.

The people behind these schemes must be able to see that - but it seems to fall into the category "someone else's problem".

It is because the charge at the "recycling centre" is paid to the County Council, but fly tipping has to be cleared by the District Council.

I think that's an extortionate charge

when I use to dump such waste I couldn't get more than about 4 bags of waste in my car

It takes no account of whether you are turning up in a large estate or a city runabout

That seems a bit on the steep side. Where is this ?

They are all at it though and the countryside is suffering badly as a result with gratuitous fly tipping occurring more frequently.

Here are the North Yorkshire CC charging rates:

(bottom of the page has actual prices)

Old car tyres being charged at 1.70p each is already causing trouble for us in North Yorkshire with people throwing them into fields and at the roadside rather than pay typically £2 disposal fee at the garage.

Of course it costs way more for the highways agency to tidy up dumped stuff by the roadside so it is an unhelpful charging policy.
