Something trivial

I've had to make a trek to the local DIY shop just to purchase a metre of earth sleeving which I only want 4" of.

So why don't the cable manufactures implement a green sheething on the earth conductor of electrical cable ie 1.5,2.5 and 6mm cable?

Should have asked - I'd have popped some in an envelope for you. :-)

I needed it today. ;-)

I've no doubt that if a cable manufacture was to start putting a sheath on the earth conductor, sales would rise as to me this is a silly thing to do in respect to leaving the conductor bare.

Then you should have asked the day before yesterday. :-) (Of course, you didn't know you'd need it until...)

That would increase the price and sparks would stick with the cheaper non-insulated.

I'd suggest a couple of metres (or whatever might make sense) of sleeving stuck to every drum.

The reason the earth is bare inside the cable ,so that any damge to the conductor wires will leak to earth.

Why use miles of sleeving when the average punter only needs 4 inches?

So why is it not allowed to leak to earth when the damage is at the end?

Wilkinson sell it in small amounts, not sure how much you get but it comes in a small sealed bag....probably less than 1, worth.

I bought 100m when I needed 4", my local DIY shop is toolstation and they don't do less. £4.44 but it wasn't worth the time to go elsewhere.

Cost.

Pretty much the same here. Kept meaning to offer a few metres of red, black, blue, brown and green/yellow in a pack on ebay. But that simply never happened.

It's already available as cable as used on appliances.

The ordinary cable is slim, cheap and does the job at the expense of a few inches of extra sleeving at virtually no cost.

An added benefit being that when you run a stanley knife along it to expose the cables its not going to damage the insulation on L & N.

It would also make the overall cable wider.

The trouble is you will lose the left over sleeving and will have to buy some more next time you need it!

You need help ie nick a slice in the grey outer covering, grab the earth conductor with a pair of pointed nose pliers and pull whilst holding the outer grey covering.

Hmmm! could explain that a tad better...

Slice/nick the grey outer sheathing about half inch, grab the earth conductor with a pair of pointed nose pliers, pull the earth conductor towards the nick and down it whilst holding the grey outer sheath in the other hand. Pulling of the earth conductor will act as a knife to slice the grey outer sheathing to the amount of wires that need exposing. ;-)

Very expensive way of buying it.

Cost and size.

A more practical solution would be to include cut lengths with every socket, etc sold in DIY places.

Wher I work we also sell it by the meter, however if someone wants only 4" I'm happy to give it for nothing. People appreciate good service and will return and spend money on other items.

No. You "wanted" it today. You could have left the CPC bare for a day or two and fitted the sleeving later.

Cost. It would never work.
