Smelly Toilet

I have a customer on a local industrial estate with a very smelly Gents toilet.

Ladies is next door & both toilets have vents in the ceiling tiles connected to ducting and then to a large slow running fan which exhausts outside.

Ladies smells fine, Gents really stinks. Checked for leaks around the soil pipe etc, cleaned out the ducting. Airflow seems the same from both vents, but no way of testing it.

Is there any kind of air treatment equipment that might help? Would an Ioniser make any difference?

It's soaked into the flooring and walls so pongs. Assuming you have cleaned the areas with a weak hydrogen peroxide solution and allowed to dry it should be fine.

Had this problem under badly fitted lino in a sports centre once........Tried vineager, and then Hyd Perox, seemed to work

Fit a red button with 'Harpic' written above? Seems to work in the commercials. ;-)

Air Ionisers don't work, when the people that piss all over the floor are off the smell goes. Good ventilation also helps such as extraction fan. You can get specialist toilet deodoriser liquids for putting in urinals. They have a really strong perfume smell. That's what gets used at work. I'll get the name of it as it's left on the window ledge! Regular cleaning of the U bends and making sure the floor is sealed also helps. The cleaners in our place don't speak English, can't read labels or Health & Safety info so scrubbed the floors with deodoriser and poured floor polish in to the urinals which was quite funny. They also managed to tip fairy liquid from big containers down toilets in the ladies as it was the same colour as the bleach ! A few people had a fright.

Check for leaks were pipes might go behind false walls. Where I work the ladies bog was flushing it's contents down a pipe with a crack in it. That leaked all over a basement and it must have been months before anyone noticed.

No one has mentioned an obvious possibility..the bog is flushing the trap on the basin dry.

That's why the middle classes have started shopping at Lidl - the labels are in all those funny foreign languages so the au pair can understand them.

Standard party joke when I were a lad - tip a bottle of bubble bath & a bottle of red food colouring in the cistern, and wait for the screams.
