Siemens oven giving trouble again...

Hi all,

Last year, I posted about our Siemens oven and the problem was correctly identified to be the element*, it was replaced by a non OEM (and quite cheap!) element. The oven is now having the same problem again. Could it be because the element was a cheap one and not the genuine Siemens one? I have yet to test it with the element disconnected so still not 100% sure it's the element at fault.

>Could be, or there may be more then one element in the oven, you will need to disconnect the element(s) to test this...

It could also be the fan if it has one.

Thank you, the upper oven/grill works but the lower one doesn't so I guess that leaves the element or fan motor in the lower oven.

That sounds likely - some ovens have more then one element in the main oven, for example, mine has various heating modes that include "top and bottom heating" (Also a Siemens) so if yours has more then one element, then the one you have replaced may be OK, and another one has failed - you should be able to tell by opening it up and seeing what is connected to where.

Also some ovens have element on either side and these are 110v one connected in series. Usually only one has failed.

If it is a fan oven make sure the bearing are free and the fan blades are not covered in grease. This will slow the fan down and make the elements run hotter and lead to shortened life.

IIRC I posted a similar tale a while back - slowly taking a cooker apart looking for the component causing the RCD trip... in the end I having tried all the obvious components, I got it down to the lead with nothing connected to it on the cooker end! Turns out the lady of the house had washed down the tiles behind the cooker earlier, and ended up dribbling a mixture of flash and water on the plug! That was hence leaky enough for a RCD trip.

A long time ago SWMBOs parents had a cooker that seemed from new, to overheat out of control. The funny thing was, that if there was a lot of cooking to be done, the reverse happened and it didn't get hot enough. The repair man came several times but it was always the same. So my father in law had a look and found that in manufacture, the top and bottom oven control phials had been put in each other's pockets.

Have just checked it is the element by removing it and trying the oven; it worked without cutting out so I think the element needs replacing again. I was going to get a genuine Siemens one but it's over £50! Is it really worth the extra cost?

I'd be amazed if Siemens/bosch/neff make their own elements. Find out who supplies them and buy one of those. You might find that something else in your kitchen/house is leaking but not enough to trigger the trip. When your element get a bit of a leak the effect adds up an pop goes the trip. Do some homework and you might have less trouble.
