Semi OT Latestbunch of idiots.

That *is* a reverse osmosis "filter"?

that was essentially what I was talking about.

No such thing.

A filter holds back particle that are larger than the pore size. The semi permeable membranes in RO units have an effective pore size that is much larger than the ions that are retained by the membrane. Larger molecules than ions can pass through the membrane if they hydrogen bind with the membrane.

Well that figure is in the wrong range. For seawater the pressures required are higher, for brackish water lower. As an example of choosing a suitable pressure for RO you couldn't be more wrong.

But don't you need to import the seeds from amsterdam ;-)

I am reliably informed that Trill bird seed used to be the best source. I believe the seeds are better sterilised these days.

Well that's what happens when you stop reading halfway through.

Well that's wrong for sea water you need about 40 - 80 bar and 600 psi is 40 bar. Higher pressures give you the ability to get purer water as the rejection ratio goes up, but for drinking water you wouldn't need it. Lower pressures also result in more "waste" water, but this is the sea, there is plenty of it.

vapour and condensation plants actually work quite well in hot places as well

More or less.

Certainly chucking it off the side of a boat would be a more reliable method of delivery to an intended destination than Royal Mail have been these past few weeks.

Those ships with opening bottoms would be about right. Sail over the Marianna Trench and let it all out.

You really are bonkers if you think that would work..

No it's not. SWMBO has birds, the stuff grows on our compost heap sometimes.

Hemp seed has largely disappeared/become expensive from the bird seed market. The stuff you do get is not suitable for smoking, virtually no dope in it.

Your usual breathtaking ignorance. Why don't you just google Himalayas-solar-power before you open your mouth.

?p=himalayas%20solar%20power&fr2=sb-top&fr=sfp&rd=r1 Clearly a poorly travelled person. All the worlds mountains have extensive mining/other mineral recovery. Have done for centuries. Lots of people live permenently at high altitudes, there are cities at high altitudes.

Where do you suppose most of the world's lithium is for example?

BTW notice the sky in the picture. Ideal PV sky.

You mean the stuff would stay in the ship? Or do you foresee other difficulties. Do enlighten us, oh guru, we are keen to learn.

No it's not.

I'll side with Den. 800psi or thereabouts on every seawater fed watermaker I've come across. The inlet to the main pump is held at around 100psi

The Other Mike

Yes me too. Filmtec 8 for example.

However dennis was claiming 600psi. See above.

I'm fairly sure they changed the ingredients in the 1960s. My source, aka Amphetamine Annie*, would not have been wrong about what sort of seeds were in it in then.

*Probably taken from the song, rather than the song being about her, as when I last heard, she was still alive.
