Seeking advice on fitting box for a gas meter

Hi

We are hoping to move house and have gas installed. If the gas meter is fitted outside, we have to choose between:

a) a (big) surface-mounted box b) a box recessed into the cavity wall c) a sunken box.

My questions are about b). We would be responsible for fitting the box. I've done plenty light-weight DIY but never cut any big holes in a wall. It's a conventional uninsulated cavity wall (1960s) with rendering. What would be the best cutting method? Is there any additional support needed at the top of the hole (like a mini-lintel)? Any advice gratefully received.

I think a line of holes with an SDS drill and then chisel out.

Check the depth of the outer leaf + cavity versus the depth of the box. If you bridge the cavity with the meter box you might end up with a cold, damp, condensation cold-spot inside.
