Security WareHouse

Hi all

Anyone used securitywarehouse.com? They seem to have the best prices for Texecom gear! I am reluctant to use Internet-only vendors since my bank details were swiped late last year. Granted I don't actually know who the culprit was, but it makes you wary of all transactions and inclined to ask the question.

TIA

Phil

Well they do have a snail mail address and a telephone and fax number and an email address - so it passes all my tests. And a support forum that seems to get answered by staff!

Not used them but they look pretty good to me.

It's a hell of a walk to Florida if you don't want to order online.

I had my card skimmed a couple of years ago. The first I knew of it was a friendly phone call from my card issuer MSDW (unfortunately since taken over by Goldfish) asking if I had really ordered several GBP000's worth of building materials to be delivered to an address in Plumstead. We tracked the skimmer down to Argos (see other thread) in Eltham. I'm now much more observant of what till droids do with my cards.

Do they also match across other sources of information like BT DQ, the local business directory(s) etc...

Try phoning a couple of local electrical wholesalers for prices.

I don't think much of the securitywarehouse.com site, but, if you meant security warehouse.co.uk, they have one big factor in their favour if you are worried about card security. According to the logos on their site, they use Protx, which is a third party card hander. That means that the people who take your card details have very robust data protection measures in place and the only card details they pass on to the vendor are the card type, the issuing bank and the last four digits of the number. Even if you need a refund, there is no need for the vendor to know your card details. It is done through Protx using a unique transaction number that was allocated to your payment when it was made.

Of course, you do need to check that they really do use Protx to take your card details. It is possible to blend Protx seamlessly into the site but, as they are using a fairly unsophisticated implementation of a standard shopping cart programme, it seems unlikely they have bothered. It should, therefore, be fairly obvious when you are handed over to the Protx server to enter your card details.

I have a feeling that Trading Standards would not be too impressed with their claim that they are aiming at the professional installer without a requirement to register as a trade customer and log on before being able to access the site. So, IMO, they are sailing close to the wind by not showing VAT inclusive prices at least as prominently as VAT exclusive prices. However, that is not really relevant to the question of card security.

I just made up a test basket and the raw prices appear to be inc vat unless otherwise stated which is quite nice for a change, it makes the prices quite competitive too.

As you say, no indication of reliability but probably worth a punt on the non primary CC.

OTOH, the vat inclusive prices seem very similar to CPC's + vat prices which may be a tad worrying.

Meeting some of the requirements of the E-commerce Regulations 2002 is not really much of a recommendation, although failing to give that information would suggest that they were either unaware of their statutory obligations or were not bothered by them.

(Assuming securitywarehouse.co.uk)

I know someone who works there (might even own it) via the ZoneMinder forum

formatting link
- username 'jameswilson') and, from the impression I have got from his posts over the years, they seem like a thoroughly trustable lot.

However, it has to be said your question doesn't make much sense. Someone mentioned they got their card swiped in Argos - does that mean noone should trust any of their stores?

Thanks Adam, but I always try that route first. I have contacted at least 5 suppliers locally (in Hull) and the only one who stocks Texecom kit, Gardner Security, is expensive and claims to be trade-only.

Oh absolutely. As far as possible I now avoid frequenting high street stores preferring to spend my money in the cheaper but more secure interweb world.
