SDS drill

The Bosch GBH 2-20D is on a special offer today at Amazon for £78. That's a slight reduction compared to other places.

Is this a sensible purchase? I just want a corded SDS+ drill, with safety clutch and fairly light (as I'm weedy and ought to start going to the gym again). I will only be using it occasionally. Ability to chisel would be good.

Anybody care to suggest a better buy, please?

Have they really called it GBH? :)

Bosch Blue used to have a good reputation, but this is both new and cheap. I have no reason to doubt that it would be good, but personally I don't normally buy stuff that is too new to have any feedback.

It's £40 more in Toolstation (which are normally good value), something similar is £15 more in Screwfix.

There are a range of broadly similar drills (including Bosch) in Wickes

On paper, the Amazon one is a bargain. This one seems to be close

and has a lot of reviews.

Quick search turns up Northants Tools a bit cheaper and quicker delivery than that Amazon supplier is offering.

I'd get this for a few pounds more:

It's basically what I have and it is pretty impressive for a 2kg. Done a lot of hard work wall chasing (to the point of spitting grease which means it ran a tad hot) and it's still fine and reliable.

Funnily enough, I bought this Hitachi to replace a stolen Blue Bosch. On paper it punches higher than the competition (and certainly seems jolly powerful) but I've found it annoyingly compromised:

  • Cable - too short. The Bosch I could plug in and shin up a ladder, the Hitachi I almost always need an extension, even at floor level.
  • Depth guide - useless. The Bosch has a locking pawl mechanism, the Hitachi just relies on friction and as soon as you get near the correct depth it gets pushed backwards. Result increasingly deep holes.
  • Very stiff mode selector (ok, don't switch v often, so maybe it'll loosen up in time)

While I could replace the cable, I find not being able to rely on the depth guide a major PITA and often find myself lamening the Bosch.

I'd sooner put my trust in Mak or DeWalt.
