More information than I really needed to know, thanks.

No governor will slow or stop an engine that's running on its own oil fumes.

And it was something to be proud of. Ok, half French, but still...

powerful engine? A beter designed enegine. It was taken from a WW1 US plane engine.

What guns? In the desert German guns were not better than UK guns until about 12 tigers came in. The Germans knocked out most UK tanks with artillery.

ITYM flack guns, The 88 was capable of putting a shell about 8 miles straight up, putting some steel through 2" armour was easy for it. Of course the fact that the early British guns couldn't fire HE meant the British tanks couldn't even fire back and stop the 88s from shooting them.

IIRC most German tanks were knocked out by subs sinking their fuel supplies.

A plane with good figures has the passengers packed in like sardines in a tin. The QE2, not.

True. Valve float should limit the revs, though.

Enough diesels have self-destructed to make that unlikely. It would seem that valve floating happens after the insides have come out.

The alternative to the Liberty was the Meteor, which produced 50% more power and that meant a lot more waste heat to dispose of.

The 5cm Pak 38 and Kwk 38 were quite capable of penetrating the armour of the Crusader at anything up to 1000m. The 7.5cm Pak 40 could do so at

2000m.

So a plane is greener than the QE2 even before you consider the other pollution. Ban the ships!

You've got it exactly wrong again, Dennis.

Try look at shipping costs for goods versus airfreight. You might learn something.

This is currently free of ice for a few months of the year. A pilot is needed to navigate through. It will cut sailing time and fuel expense considerably from the UK to the Far East and the west coast of the USA. A container route from Liverpool is being considered.

A fair amount by aircraft. At the end of the desert war when he UK caught up with HE and larger tank guns and using the Sherman Tank, the Germans, and the 88mm were no big thing. Shear size of the British forces in the end meant they had little chance.

????

Yes, HP and torque are equal at 5252rpm.

Maybe, but HP is work done over a specific time period which is why at higher revs more work is done within that same time period than at lower revs where peak torque is. At higher rpms, more fuel is consumed and more energy is output within a given time frame.

I shall try and get a test with a G-meter this weekend.

How many passengers does the QE2 carry today?

Perhaps if you used a current ship rather than a museum piece your figures would have some relevance.

Royal Caribbean Freedom of the Seas Ships complement 5600 Cruise speed 21.6kt Fuel Consumption 12800 kg/h

46 miles per passenger gallon.

They can't be equal since they are different units. That would be like saying 10 apples equals 10 oranges.

You would first need to be certain about the various parameters of your individual engine - not just use the maker's figures.

Exactly. For every gallon of German petrol delivered to the front line, it took six or seven gallons to get it there, including losses at sea/air attack/etc.
