Replacing a Broken Door Mirror Glass

The glass in the door mirror of my 1980 BMW got broken but it is still intact. Halfords only supply that one cut to a template and BMW charge between =A350 and =A360. What are the chances of getting the nearest fit and sticking it on top of the old cracked but intact glass.

It should be very easy to get a replacement from any one of the several dozen BMW only salvage places dotted around the country. Most do mail order, and it'll probably cost you less than a tenner.

Sticking one on top of another is just horrible.

Are they electric mirrors? Or adjustable from inside the car? If so the mirror is on a plastic frame which is just clipped to the pivot or motor mechanism. Run it fully in one direction and lever off with a screwdriver, then go to the other direction and do the same. The plastic frame is just glued to the mirror with double sided tape or similar and can be removed. So if Halfords do an identical size one you can glue that to the frame. You might even be able to change over the heater element - although it's unlikely this still works. ;-)
