Not half as nasty as napalm.

Or in fact being on fire dressed in a plastic anorak.

Or in fact a bread knife.

Or in fact a car.

Or in fact a million other things fr which greater familiarity breeds greater contempt.

Eyes and caustioc is extremely bad news. But so are eyes and many many things - shards of metal off a lathe, and air rifle pellets to name but two.

Caustic on skin is by no means a major problem if washed off promptly.

I remember a boy at school sucking a mouthful up when using a burette - or was it a pipette. Talk about washing yer mouth out with soap. Anyway he washed it with a lot of water, got packed off to te doctors, who asked

"Did you wash it out?" "Yes." "Did you swallow it?" "No. "Bugger off home and suffer then, and that will teach you a lesson"

Or words to that effect....

No it doesn't, although it may prevent much more damage. Flush it off and then use vinegar and more water. N.B. if you have a caustic burn, vinegar *will hurt*.

Well, it seems to me that you've either learnt eff-all in fifty-odd years, or had no experience. Never mind, try an experiment. Make up some caustic soda solution. Cold will be fine. Stand by the sink in the kitchen, with an open bottle of vinegar close by, and some in mug. Put some caustic soda in another mug, and take a large sip. When it begins to hurt a lot, which won't take long, swill out your mouth with cold water. When you realise it still hurts, and is getting worse, swill your mouth out with vinegar, and see whether that hurts, too. It will, but it will stop your skin being removed.
