I must get my ass into gear and move my house out of the conservation area, so I can cover the roof in a PV array.

Install the PV array beneath the roof, and they'd never know. ;)

not wishing to be venomous, but those who live in rented houses or who don't have a big enough (or any) roof can't install PV even if they wanted to. But they still have to pay the higher electricity costs to subsidise those who do own their own homes with big rooves and have a dollop of spare cash in the bank.

I can see why people see a certain unfairness in it.

NO planning permission is required for solar panels on the roof of a dwellinghouse or building within the curtilage of a dwellinghouse in a conservation area. It is permitted development. Although not all planning offices appear to have bothered to read the legislation. There are x3 additional conditions for conservation areas which can be summarised as:

- minimise visual impact on the building

- minimise visual impact on the area

- remove at end of life But they cannot dtop you having them. See SI 675/2008 and SI 2362/2008 Regards Bruce
