How about a bit of 1/4 square wood, profile the business end then cut a diagonal slot into which the wet and dry will fit or simply hold the paper in place with an elastic band?

Fibre glass pencils aren't "coarse" and are highly useful.

Another one of my favourites is a Garryflex block. Cut slices and glue them to wooden sticks for working inside small spaces.
