Domestic vacuum cleaners aren't much cop these days, as with other consumer durables, competition driving prices down means manufacturing costs have to be cut.

Get a 'Numatic' vacuum, I use them every day at work, they will stand up to rough use, provide a lot more suction for the same or less motor power, do not block up easily, etc etc etc. Their 'Henry' model is sold by many retail outlets.

One of those products, like 'Dualit' toasters, 'Aga' and 'Rayburn' cookers, and 'Roberts' radio's, that are miles ahead of the competition.

I opened up one of these after it reportedly stopped working. The build quality is very good. Thermal cut-out had cut out, due to overheating. It would have worked just fine if left 10 mins.

Someone said to me that some manufacturers are building in deliberate redundancy, so the products die quicker.

I always thought that Roberts and Dualit were about the aesthetics rather than the equipment. I wouldn't have an Aga, myself (aren't they on day and night?).

Someone I know (in the know) recommended Miele washing machines. They are expensive, but some of the machines have 10 year parts and labour warranties, and they are designed to last for 15-20 years.

I have one and they are built like proverbial brick outhouses. Another demo trick is to take a coin and scrape it down the side - it doesn't scratch (although I haven't tried this on mine and I'm not about to test the door thing either).

yes: my lodger used work for Powerhouse and he always said to buy Miele as they are the only ones built properly. So we got a Miele washing machine...... while researching them, I noticed advanced warning on their site that they would no longer be carrying spares for a model they last produced 15 years ago......

In the meantime, Which? rate the miele cat&dog cylinder vac the best (and they HATE uprights!!). Approx 140ukp, I believe.

No, I don't work for Miele;)
