Yep the youngsters of today wouldn't know decent entertainment if it hit them in the face anything other than unrecognizable NOISE blasting out of a radio or stereo or bodes prancing about on a dance floor like they are having a fit is just rubbish to them . Grant .
So you must have been one of the odd one or two that where incapable of making their own entertainment and considering the large amount of GOOD programs and GOOD entertainers that the BBC where giving us in those days I often found it hard to do anything else but listen to the radio . Grant .
Yes full of wars, killings, totally undisciplined kids etc etc yes the present is full to over flowing with everything that is BAD.
Grant .
Had you mentioned a transistor radio to me in 1952 I would have said what's one of those .
So you never saw accumulators then Steve. Grant .

Workers' Playtime was decent entertainment?
Err yes, took them to the shop to be charged up. And?
Err Family Favourites? Two way Family Favourites? Sing Something Simple? were you on drugs in the 50s? Those programs were utterly dire. In fact
90% of radio output back then was dire, dull, boring.Just like today.
Yes . Grant.
Just wondered if you may be of the next generation after they became extinct :))))) I can only just about remember them . Grant .
We used to take ours to be charged by the local 'Wireless Willie' very frequently. I liked the glass one I had to power the lights in my dolls' house rooms.

There is that too, but it doesn't impinge on my life too much. There still is a lot of good around.
Mary
Yes.

I don't remember Sing Something Simple but if you thought it was dire, dull, boring ... no, I'll not say it :-)

Some do, yes, though I doubt that all NPR/PBS radio stations do. In my area (Wisconsin/Illinois) one of the northern Illinois stations carries it from about midnight for a few hours. It may be a means of providing a service for a reasonable cost (I don't know the economics of it), and of giving the transmitter something to do. I enjoy listenting if I happen to be up at the time.
National Public Radio also has its own news coverage & reporters.
The Wisconsin Public Televison station in my area has BBC World News on late night. I don't know if other public TV stations do that.
An independent non-commercial (i.e.: community supported) radio station in Madison, Wisconsin, also carries BBC news.

You do surprise me Mary this was one of the old greats that lasted just about the longest I think it was still going in the early sixites I may be wrong . Grant .

In that case, for some *really* decent live entertainment, you must come to the brass band concert I will be playing in next month! :o)

I make sure it doesn't impinge on my life too much either I only step outside my front door when it is absolutely necessary there is nothing out there now to interest me these days . The things that a lot of people do like to do like creating trouble at football matches and taking part in or watching other sporting activities or going to pubs and clubs listening to noise blaring out of juke boxes and from the stage is just not for me at all . Grant .
Is there then why is that when ever I switch on TV or open a newspaper I am confronted with killings raping's and robberies !!!!. Grant .
Yes, it was even parodied on "Dead Ringers" not too long ago. Perhaps "Mary" never stooped to listening to the Light programme?
Who's band and where is the venue ?bet you are not has good has Fodens with Harry Mortimore at the helm though yet another gooden from yesteryear :))))))) .
