Re: Finished hardwood boards for making boxes?

It's not really what you want, and I'm sure you've seen it already, but

>Screwfix sell pre-finished hardwood flooring.

Thanks for the tip. I hadn't thought of Screwfix but now you've mentioned it I've looked at their catalogue and see that they do quite a nice variety of solid hardwood flooring. I've already considered flooring for the job and may use it as one option. The downside for me is that it's on the thick side (around 19mm) and has specially formed edges for jointing purposes, which would have to go. That's why I'd prefer square edged paneling if I could find it.

My local reclamation yard (between Guildford/Woking in Surrey) has a good selection of old hardwood boards, as I'm sure many do, but this will require a run through the thicknesser/jointer before suitable for furniture use - you can get some lovely wide old boards though.

I've got some leftover oak boards. I don't think they'd be much good for making boxes; the ends and back are unfinished wood, whereas the top surface has a thick varnish. Also, the back has a pair of grooves cut out, big enough to show on an end-cut.

I'd be interested in taking a look. Are you in Canada as your email addy suggests? Any excuse for a bit of travel is always appreciated.:-)
