Do they work? Any particularly best kind?

For background, we can hear scuttling noises in our bungalow roof and been through a couple of rounds of poisoning and blocking all roof entry points, now we've got to consider the drains.

Thanks

Have you trapped any rats in the loft, are there obvious signs of rats in the loft? There might only be one or two and once you've killed them, the problem may go away. Check that your drains don't allow any light down them. If the rats can't see any light, they are less likely to travel up the drain, unless you're putting a lot of food down the drain.

Oh, rats can also enter through the wall cavity.

Looks like a circular saw. "No Mr Rat, I expect you to die".

WTF wants to clean up that mess in the drain pipe?

Thanks for posting.

Yes, we've seen droppings. Yes, we've killed them. The problem hasn't gone away. All the advice I've read says that any and all entry points need to be identified and closed.

My guess is that they're gaining access to an underfloor area via the drains, then climbing through the cavity into the loft.

I'd never admit to throwing that sort of money at a bit of simple fabrication

Not up the walls and into the eaves?

I'd dig where the drains enter the property and fill any holes and check the pipes at that point.

You have my (our!) sympathy. I've had rats twice (so far) in our garden (we've been here 30 years btw -- which is a factor, in terms of determining "regular residence").

The first occasion was a few years ago. After I had trapped (killed) a few they just disappeared.

The second occasion has been just recently when signs appeared near our bird table (never actually saw one, but found a tunnel). I dug around the tunnel trying to find its end (didn't find the end: I would need to excavate some stone steps), but the evidence then disappeared.

In my case, disturbance of their settlement seemed to make them go away. Your case is worse, obviously. Good luck!

(That's not even 2p's worth, but I thought I'd lend my support to you, and my mild experience to the common discussion!)

My mum's neighbour had rats in the loft of their detached house.

Advice was to make it "uncomfortable" for them. A bright light on a PIR.

Mum also had rats in her garage. Spotted after the box of birdfood had been chewed open.

Found the biggest most comfy nest under a pile of ancient wood under the workbench corner. Removed their bedding, moved all the wood and mum left her flickering fluorescent light on for a few days. Seems to have annoyed them enough to move on.

They like a quiet life so anything to interrupt their peaceful place and they'll most likely go elsewhere.
