Quote for replacement boiler

Just got three plumbers in to quote for replacement boiler Vaillant EcoMax Pro 18E in a small 2 bed flat.

I have already done the following:

-Replaced CH Cylinder

-Converted from C-Plan to Y-Plan (to comply with Part L)

-Replaced CH Timer & Thermostat

-Run new 22mm pipework to new boiler location back to airing cupboard ready for old boiler flow/return to be disconnected and new pipework connected.

Quote is to:

-Fit boiler and flue in new location

-Disconnect gas from old backboiler

-Disconnect old boiler flow/return and connect to new

-Re-route gas pipe to new boiler location and connect

-Connect electrics to existing wiring centre

-Flush out

-Commission boiler

-Add inhibitor

Plumber A - didn't show Plumber B - quoted =A32600 (no powerflush) Plumber C - quoted =A31800 (with powerflush) or =A31540 (no powerflush)

By my calculations:

Vailant EcoMax Pro 18E - =A3660 (price from

formatting link
Flue Kit - =A379 Flushing Chemicals (Fernox Cleanser, Inhibitor etc) - =A360 approx

Total Kit - =A3800

Does the above quote from Plumber C sound reasonable for the south-east ? The latest Which magazine puts a south east plumber at between =A335-50 per hour. Not sure how long you would allow for the job but I would guess a day, maybe a 1.5 days max if you factor in the time to powerflush. The quotes were not from one-man bands but larger local firms.

Why don't you go ahead and do the whole job? You sound "competent" enough. Failing that, shop around. There's a lot of kiddology going on in this field. Plenty of competition, and most of them aren't as busy as they'd have you believe.

Friend just had his ancient combi blow up last week. Got two plumbers in to quote for replacing the boiler and one 800 x 600 single panel radiator - ie nothing fancy whatsoever.

Plumber 1 quoted £1750+VAT, plumber 2 quoted £2350 inc VAT. No powerflush. This is in the north east.

He didn't get the details of what boiler was to be fitted as I think he was in shock.

Anyway - a quick trip to B&Q and £470 of boiler and radiator and a £100 visit from a corgi fitter to commission it and he's sorted. Took less than a day to remove old boiler, hang new one and sort out pipework. No matter how you look at it it's a lot of money for a days work.

I had same issue here, got quoted £1600 for new potterton suprima boiler with fitting. they estimated a days work. from that I worked out a profit of £950 for a days work. nice. if your a plumber. in the end because of the poor name potterton have, I went for a worcester12he and employed a plumber pal to fit it for me. I saved around £800 in the end.

Surely they "gave you" that money to have one of those things?....

My local paper (SE London) carries plenty of ads for "boiler replacement from £800" etc, which puts the labour at £300 ish. Tell 'em they can do the job at that price (with all the extra pipework) and you're flexible as to when. You'll be amazed how quickly they find a spare day where they're prepared to work for nothing (or £300 to the rest of us).

Stuart, Im not expert but your quote sounds excessively high. A reasonable plumber WONT charge more than 25 gbp an hour excluding parts. If you opt for the influx of Eastern European plumbers then the price is massively lower and the workmanship just as good. Try this guy here, he comes highly recommended by a work colleague but sori havent needed him myself. good luck and dont get ripped off, shop around and go for the guys who are not attached to a company.

try this guy
