Quest for *realistic* imitation log/coal fire

We were in Cosco Supermarket a while ago and saw a fantastical realistic 'imitation' fireplace log fire. It uses one of those humidifiers (that shoot out water vapour) and with red lights shining on the vapour it turns out to be *very realistic*.

However doing some searching on this fire, it looks like it needs very regular replacement of some kind of ceramic disc, which the makers

*shoot themselves in the foot* by charging an 'arm and a leg' for. I don't want this continual added expense and upkeep.

The next most realistic is a computer monitor standing in the fireplace fed from a computer with a video recorded of an actual log/coal fire. This is an option i would go for, were it not for the bother of having to set up a computer going every-time.

I do wonder if there any way i could get this monitor going with a simple on/off switch setup, say using a usb memory stick containing the video or something as simple. But i'm not tech-savvy enough to know about this. So any thoughts welcomed on this.

It looks to me, as if finally i shall have to go for one of the dozens of 'flame-effect' electric fires on the market.

Would anyone have an opinion on which of these common or garden electric flame effect fires has the most realistic flame effect? Thanks for advice.

There are a few TVs that have hidden in their deep menu system the option to pretend to be a tank of goldfish or log fire.

MPEG of actual flames and a monitor displaying it.

Sounds like a job for a RaspberryPi that boots and runs straight into "fire mode". Turn it on and off at will.

Costco US has a new fire on sale which might meet your needs. Can't remember the name, have a look on the US website. The US products frequently turn up in the UK within a month or two. US are also selling half sheet paper kitchen towels branded Kirkland. These save a lot of wastage so I'm hoping these will also make their way here.
