Thanks again for all the suggestions. We live in the country with no near neighbours, so co-opting assistance isn't really an option.
The kiln will be in a shed with a none-too-substantial roof, but I was tentatively thinking of jury-rigging a heavy wooden support beam on four dexion legs for the pulley system, but the more I think about it the less I like it. Head room could be a problem anyway. Sky-hooks might be another possibility :-)
I think I'll eventually go down the repeated small jacking and support stacking suggested by AD, especially as this was my second option.
Ah... but were you jacking from beneath?
