Pouring lead

I seem to remember watching the occasional video about the re(?)building of this boat over the years, this one turned up on my youtube recommended list about pouring lead in the keel, H&S doesn't seem to figure heavily in the first attempt ...

He has built the whole thing from scratch - starting with a big pile of flat steel and an incredible "can do" attitude!

He says as much in his "feel free to come and help" video promos :

It is obvious from the noise his 'lead' ingots make that they are not pure lead. Tyre weights and type metal - both contain significant amounts of antimony - it hardens the alloy, and has the unusual property of expanding as it solidifies. In 'hot metal' type setters this ensured a good well defined character is formed as the solidifying metal presses into all the crevices.
