Polish builder efficiency

Was having a bacon roll and coffee on a bench in town today, watching the Polish equivalent of Laurel and Hardy laying paving slabs. This firm has been digging up and re-laying the pavements and part of the road, caused chaos for over a year now.

These two Poles are angle-grinding slabs to fit into odd spaces, number 1 is wielding the angle grinder while #2 pours water from a jerry-can onto the slab. When they've cut it, they both light a fag. Man 2 then waits for the lights to change, carries the empty jerry cans about 50 yards to a (leaking!) temporary tap and takes 5 minutes to fill them up again. He waits for the lights again, takes them back to man 1 and puts them on the floor where man 1 is still standing around smoking his fag.

*Then*, man 1 waits for the lights to change, walks 50 yards to his truck which is parked right next to where the tap is, picks up a small bag of sand, waits for the lights, returns to the site and dumps the bag next to the jerry cans where man 2 is standing around smoking. Conversation, finish their fags, then sweep a bit of sand around, place the cut slab in place and start on the next one.

I don't know who the boss of this firm is, but he must be shagging someone on the Council

The council are probably amazed at the efficiency gains compared to their own internal staff.

Yeah, they're simply *years* ahead of us.

How do you know they're not on a fixed price contract?

If they can work that slow and the contract is fixed price, then the council has obviously negotiated very badly and should have been paying far less in the first place!
