Pointing, as a career

I know someone with OCD and Asperger's Syndrome who rather fancies a career pointing brickwork. I imagine that's also the fiddly part of the work that many builders detest.

Is it possible to make a living just doing pointing, and how would he/she go about getting trained up?

Find a local building contractor willing to take them on. On the job training shouldn't take long.

Having said that, most bricklayers I've known have done the pointing as they build the wall, while pointing paving is done after laying. The only real opening I can see would be to for the person to offer to do repointing on old buildings, which would involve raking out the old stuff and putting new in. Mostly, it needs doing every 25 - 30 years.

It's not hard to learn.

I think there is a niche for a specialist repointing old houses using original materials (i.e. lime mortar). Builders tend to like using portland cement and producing a 'string vest' appearance.

Sure. do a PPE at Oxford - any thicko can get it - and join the Labour Party. You can have a cushy career pointing at anything that takes your fancy and sneering 'toffs' ' middle class' 'profits' 'stuff that works' and so on.

Sure, if enough of the local buildings are old enough to need it. Can he deal with the customer/business aspects with aspergers? Can he get past the ocd and get the job done?

Well, actually, she's a lady. It now turns out that: a) she's afraid of heights b) doesn't like the cold c) is scared of machinery like angle grinders - especially angle grinders!

So, thanks to everyone for the input (except TNP :p), and I'm sorry that I wasted your time. And if you have any indoors pointing she can do, she'll be delighted. :)

Come on, I suggested the ideal career!

Those who can, do, those who cant, teach, those who cant teach, those who cant teach, preach, and those who cant preach, become politicians.
