Plumbers 1 Sheds 0

I posted the other day with a question about my HW cylinder - decision was to get a new one. A quick survey of the market over the past couple of days shows B&Q price =A3238; Screwfix price =A3145; local plumbers merchant - =A3135. All exactly the same cylinder/manufacturer.

I thought there'd be a difference but....... blimey!

Moral of the story is never to go a shed if there's a real shop open....

I have said this many times. They seem to roll a dice and multiply by the managers DoB, with no attempt to be competitive. Yet the outside and adverts are plastered with how good their prices are. Quite fraudulent.

But... but... but, the _reason_ why joe public peeps are encoraged to go to retail places, as opposed to trade - is that the staff in the retail place are fully trained to answer all questions about the product, provide assurances that the item will be accepted with no question under the guarantee if not suited (or found faulty), and the goods on offer have been carfully preselected for quality and genuine usefulness.

Allegedly. I know, it's all tosh ...

Your old cylinder may be worth a little re price of copper. So you can knock that off the price.

I'm not sure if I posted, build a tray to go under it. Simple plywood with preservative & battens around the edge on silicone; or with fibreglass flashed over it. You just want enough to retain water sufficiently to give "indication of a leak" rather than it being hidden. If a floor goes you can get into floor, joists, bath/ sink/shower out, ceilings & walls out if built on the floor, decoration and retiling, which gets into messier refurb issues re BR where tradesmen & insurers get involved.

I as thinking of taking it to the scrappy and seeing what I'll get. I guess the PM might take it for a discount - I'll ask them

Good point - I was looking for something. I'm a bit surprised it doesn't seem to be a standard item as it only had to be a simple plastic tray the size of a cylinder and an inch or so deep.

I've noticed that the difference between online & shed prices is becoming rediculous.

300mm flexible tap connector - Screwfix £1.59, Wickes £5.99. 8mm x 100mm hammer fixings - B&Q £8.46 for 20, Toolstation £7.50 for 100.

I certainly don't assume Screwfix are always going to be the cheapest anymore. In the above examples flexibles are 98p from Toolstation - who are getting the bulk of my business at the moment.

That happened to me once.

In 1992.

In the US.

Old guy in one of the warehouses really knew his stuff on cordless tools, and gave good advice.

Never happened since.

Toolstation also offer a very good, 'next working day' free delivery service on orders over £10-00 so you don't need to build up a large order to qualify.

I would add that my BCO recmmends drill a few small (1/2"-1") holes in plywood HW cylinder bases - he's seen instances where the trapped air in the hollow leads to consdensation (bottom of HW cylinders are periodically cold) leading to rot in the base.

We've just had a Toolstation open in Cambridge across the way from Screwfix .. quite a breeze really our side of town and the trade go there whilst Joe Publicke and his missus clog up the sheds:)..

PITA going to such places on a Saturday whilst the hapless non DIY husband is desperately not trying to make a real prat of himself in front of the Missus;!...
