Plumber's Mate or silicon for sink installation ?

My son in law is installing a sink and having difficulties with the washers supplied to get the drain to seal.

Ah -says I - done this before, use Plumber's Mate.... or did I use silicon ?

Searching the archives sees the collective having a divided opinion on this. What advise should I give him ?

Thanks

Rob

Plumber's Mait. (and that is my opinion - but others know far more than me)

You mean the waste/plug where it attaches to the basin? If so, then get a 'basin waste seal' kit, halfway down this page:

Around £2 from Plumbers merchants, they seal first time. A slight daub of silicone under the waste, where it sits in the basin, then use the waste kit for the bottom. Well worth the money. Alan.

Silicone?

Not seen those before, cheers for the tip. I use LSX to seal wastes.

Plumber's Mate is less messy - and is the traditional one which has stood the test of time.

Silicone works great. And unlike mait it sets (softly) solid, so no chance of people getting mucky gloop on their clothes later. But both work.

There's no need to add an gloop or washer under the top of the waste.

Use an MS-polymer sealant. Plumbers Mait is crap.

I meant that silicone is better than silicon, which doesn't stick well. ;-)

I sealed one at the weekend with silicone. It seems using a plunger on a thin stainless steel sink had dislodged the old sealant, chunks of which were partially blocking the drain. Only afterwards did I discover there should have been 2 x 3.5" washers, not one. Would have been a better option to replace them I suppose but Saturday afternoon's not a good time to be looking for plumbers merchants.
