Please explain wiring on garage door

We have a motorised garage roller door. It gets little use because we don't actually keep the car in there. Nevertheless, the way it operates is frustrating. To open it, you press down a button on a switch wired to the motor, and hold it down. The trouble is, you have to wait for it to go all the way up before you can lower it again.

Opening up the switch, I see there are two wires which aren't actually being used. I wonder whether these, if connected appropriately, might enable me to have separate switches to control the up and down functions?

Why not press the switch at the end stop with a stick then!

How on earth would anyone know what to suggest without make, model and age of the unit?

I cannot comment on your door as you haven't given any information re make, model etc. However my door also works on a two wire sitch, press and release - it opens, press again while it's moving and it stops where it is, press again and it closes. I certainly wouldn't play with the spare wires without more info, you 'might' end up with a costly repair.

Fair question of course - but I really can't see any info on any of the equipment that identifies it! One of those little irritations in life I guess I'll have to live with.

I would investigate the runners and track, and then possibly look where the door ends up and seek a switch. Once found you could run a parallel switch to enable a convenient point of contact on the wall or whatever.

You may find the contacts are in the drive unit. When my door is fully opened and stops moving the motor doesn't stop until a threaded cam moves along a shaft and closes a contact. This also acts as the safety cut out, i.e. physically obstruct the door and the drive stops in exactly that same way as when it is fully opened/closed. See my posting earlier today.
