I'm thinking of buying a self-assembly pine bedstead from IKEA/MFI or one of the other "sheds".
Any comments about the stability of such self-assembly bedsteads? Do the joints loosen and the base start to wobble after a few months? Thanks Bruce

Yes the joints will work a little lose on the corners, but that not a great problem as they not glued joints but bolted. You bolt them up when you get home and you may find yourself tightening them up once in a while, twice a year at the most. However I would say that these beds (having had 1 or 2 for the children) are made from a wood akin to a digestive biscuit. The last ones that we bought, about a year ago when we moved house, the lad managed to break 1 of the slats in the first day or 2. I have replaced 4 slats on this 1 all told, not his fault!! if there is a knot in the wood along the slat it just a matter of time. I have made our own double from wood and to date it had no problems and neither have any of the replaced slats in the children's. Suppose it depends what price point you buying at in the first place.

Not if you apply Resin W during assembly.

If youve got an afternoon you can make something far more solid out of planed 2x4 or 2x5, and at a fraction of the price. That is if youve got a saw that will cut straight 90 degree ends.
Commercial pine beds seem to be too lightweight, corner joints collapse, slats are spaced every half mile resulting in premature mattress failure, and slats break if youre not gentle with them.
Let us know if you want details of how to make.

I see you are furcking-up the threads again.
Can you get yourself a proper newsgroup while Gluglug sorts itself out?
Single should be ok, doubles may need a spine adding, and almost certainly a "king" (humping) post in the centre....
His news posting agent is not putting in References: lines. For example, it should contain the article ID of the article posted by _phipps, (Message-ID: ...), so that software can automatically determine where to place the message in a thread display. For example, look at the headers on my message, and you'll see that included in it is the message-ID for your message.
This means that his response appears not where it should in the thread, and is annoying.

Hmm. Well, I cant expect perfection from a freebie.
I just tried another web based one yesterday, diybanter.com, but it only seems to have a small percentage of the threads on it. I want to stick with web based anonymi, and good ones seem non existent.
At least the OP knows they can make their own bed, thats what counts.
Hopefully Glug will get sorted soon. I'll try the .de site next time, see if thats any better.

Some beds are heavily made, some are thin and weakly made, obviously. £47 from Ikea... I think the OP can work it out.
