Patching a drive

'Evening all.

Over the years my drive has worn away in places and developed two large holes (a couple of feet wide, maybe 6 inches deep). What sort of drive is it? Well, it's the sort that would have been laid in the 1950s; a bit like tarmac, but with sort-of large gravel stuck together (no not nearly as fine as tarmac).

I need to do some repairs; the top surface is covered over with loose chippings so I thought that I'd be using tarmac (do I just go to a builders' merchant and buy a few bags? How would I press it down?) but would welcome advice.

Regards.
