painting stained wood

My conservatory is a fairly dark stained cedar (at least, I'm told it's cedar - probably doesn't matter). Since it needs a bit of a revamp anyway I am planning to brighten it up by painting the inside sides of the wood. The outside will stay as wood, with regular coats of preservative. It does get pretty warm inside and there's some evidence of leakage that I'll need to repair before I start painting.

Does anyone have any hints, tips, warnings etc. about the types of undercoat or paint to use.

bestest Pete

I'd advise you not to paint cedar even if only on aesthetic grounds. Is there another alternative? Sanding & light stain?

I'm with the last poster, cedar is a beautiful wood, why hide it? However, if you do go ahead, I think possibly an aluminium-based primer might be good, as this can cope with oily woods. Is cedar oily?

hi there, did you know you can get opaque wood stains now that are in most BS colours even white so you dont need to go throu the process of painting the timbers just apply a white wood stain, and yes it will cover the dark old stain, gary
