painting over black silicone sealer along kitchen upstands

as subject says the guy who fitted my worktop and upstands left a black silcone to seal the top of the upstand as there were some small gaps as wall is uneven in places. however its a bit messy and needs painting over, can i do this or do i need to put something else on top of it first?

Can't you trim it with a stanley knife? Normal paint won't take over silicone and you might make matters worse by trying to hide it.
