Outside Tap...

I wish to put an outside tap in my front garden.

The nearest water supply is to the bathroom which is situated between the front and back bedrooms upstairs, so the pipe for the tap would run under the floor in the front bedroom, through the outside wall and then down to the tap.

Can I do this using plastic water pipe with a shut off valve under the floor in order to turn the water off in the winter months.

Your helpful comments would be most appreciated.

TIA

You can certainly use plastic pipe (Hep2O etc.) under the floorboards to make it easy to get it into position - but it *does* need supporting at appropriate intervals. Not so sure about the outside. I not sure whether plastic pipe likes being exposed to UV. AIUI, Hep2O is designed for indoor use and the blue MDPE pipe is designed to be buried in the ground. Exposed plastic pipe running down a wall would look pretty horrible anyway - especially at the front of the house. Far better to use copper for this part.

I imagine you may want mains water pressure in the garden. If yes, is it mains pressure in your bathroom?

Thank you David for bringing it to my attention. Yes, it is mains water into the bathroom and yes it is for the garden. At the moment, I have to run a hose pipe from either the kitchen in the back of the house or the outside tap in the back yard through the dining room, lounge and then through the lounge window. The front of the house faces onto a field with a path at the bottom of the garden. This is used by locals and is about

43 feet from by house wall. I can imagine that a white or gray plastic pipe or even copper may look odd anyway.

Normal garden hose under a few inches of soil seems to last[1]. And as for the vandals if they don't see it they don't touch it.

[1] Hoses expand & also UK frosts don't normally go more than an inch or 2.
