OTish Density of hazel

I was pollarding a hazel of ours that was well out of control and an eight inch diameter piece of wood fell into the mill stream. To my surprise it sank. When I went into retrieve it, I realised that its density was only just greater than water as it was very easy to bring to the surface. Still I was surprised that any wood that grows in this country is that dense.

Old waterlogged wood ends up heavier than water.

Much to the disgust of the Hound Who Likes Sticks.

same is true of oak or beech.

The basic density of the organic compounds that make up wood is about

1.5 , ash is around 1% of the dry weight so water and gas spaces must make up the rest to bring the average to around 1.
