The BBC can jail people? Do tell.

In English? The BBC doesn't control 'signal bands'.

You sound like a typical freeloader. With no idea how things get paid for.

Well it does.

I used to go down the Dog and Duck on a Thursday for the quiz, and Alan Taylor was usually in there. He liked the quiz did old AJP, brilliant he was at yer history, but absolute s**te at sport or pop music. I particularly remember one night the question came up, "What years are meant by the expression 'the 1800s'?" When the answers came they said it mean 1800 to 1899. Well, by that time in the evening Alan was well pissed, and he got very airiated, and he shouted out, "No, you bloody fool! It's 1800 to 1809!"

The gaffer said, "Sit down Alan! We all know you've produced a few controversial theses in your time, but you can't make out that the 1880s means 1800 to 1809! It's bollocks mate, pure bollocks!" Alan was proper livid. "It's 1800 to 1809! Look, I've been on the telly yer know! I've written hundreds of history books! Are you saying they're all bollocks as well?"

That's where it really kicked off because the gaffer said "Yes actually, all yer books are bollocks Alan! I've been wanting to say that ever since I read your revisionist works on the origins of the Second World War!"

Well, it ended up with Alan spending the night in the nick. But I still believe him that the 1800s are 1800 to 1809. He was a fine man and a good drinking companion, especially if there were history questions.

When someone believes they are right and everyone else is wrong on such a semantic issue, it says more about their sanity and their righteous view of themselves.

You can believe what you like. You can choose to be alone in this belief, but I suggest when conversing with others and 1800s comes up, don't be surprised if everyone else interprets that as being from 1800 to 1899.

There are times when being right can be a lonely existence.

The Christian calendar marks the time in INTEGRAL numbers of years) that have elapsed since the birth of Jesus.

Wikipedia says: "Dionysius Exiguus of Scythia Minor introduced the AD system in AD 525, counting the years since the birth of Christ."

So the year 525 refers to a time when at least 525 full years had passed since Jesus was born - but fewer than 526.

The first 365 days of Jesus' life would indeed be 'year 1' for him - but until the anniversary of his birth, it would be 'Zero AD". But of course, the people of the day certainly didn't wander around saying things like "What hot weather we're having in Zero AD - much hotter than last year, Zero BC" (or would it be "One BC"?).

It is therefore of little relevance what Year Zero was - except that it was the first year of the first century. As a century is 100 years, it follows that the first century ran from the start of Year Zero (when Jesus was born) to the end of 99AD - and the start of the second century was 100AD. Any attempt to define the start of a century as xxx1 is not only pedantic - it is simply wrong!

That was my point to Charles, so if the first century, aka 100 years started at 1, then the second would have started at 101 and so on.

To be honest I don't really care and was happy to support 2000 as the new millennium, but if that is the case, from common usage then 1800s refers to 1800 to 1899 rather than any outdated definition.

I'll take your diagnosis more seriously if you'll post a copy of your Psy.D.

Likewise to be a humourless windbag.

Its all semantics.

We celebrate the numbers rolling over, not years since baby jesus, since he was born 5BC in May or something, anyway.

I had heard but I don't know. Ownership by the government does not add to the matter. Puppets running a puppet show. It figures.

Correct, it snatches them when the business goes under as with Satellite, as with Freeview and now as with broadband use. At one time it was about a set of frequencies they said the owned. Well, that has extended beyond radio & the signal frequency they once claimed..

Yes, Dave, given the peace of mind of a home and some food, I will gladly join you and a few others to make changes, freely. Or, do you demand money for all you do? My guess is, you give freely at times.
