Anyone insured a winter 4x4 just for winter?

Which insurer?

I got a quote online for Admiral's multi car policy for my usual car for 12 months plus an old 4x4 for 3 months.... Doubled the cost of my usual car, plus another £200 for 90 days on the 4x4 ?!?!?

Probably cheaper to insure then cancel come spring, but I'm never convinced about the benefits of "multi-car" anyway, especially off a bunch of pondlife like Admiral.

Some policies, especially classic car ones, allow for the policy to be suspended. Or at least they use to be!

If you have a wife apply online, assuming you are the main driver. Then apply for your wife to be the main driver but you are still insured to drive the vehicles. I have done this and reduced insuarance from £400+ to around £200 just by switching who is the policy holder. Hope this makes sense.

Unless she *is* the main driver, this is known as "fronting" and the insurers don't like it. Could give them an excuse not to pay out.

Factor in the cancellation charge into the comparison:

[check this in the small print, I think some have a ramped cancellation charge - eg cancel after 6 months and you get 3 months premium back]

If you pay by installments, don't be surprised that you have to pay a lump sum when you cancel the insurance.

thanks, i tried just, maximum seems to be only 28 days, some wouldn't quote , one did:-

£168 for 28 days..........

If it really is an old 4x4, RH Specialist Insurance might cover it on a Classic policy. My Defender is with them, for well under £100/yr comp. Two main advantages: Classic policies don't either need or accrue no-claims discounts, so you're not starting afresh (or with a token "introductory discount"); and, with policy with RH I can add and remove cars as I wish, with pro rata premium or refund to a single annual renewal date. The exemption from short-term rates or admin fees might be a function of club membership, or of the particular club arrangement with RH, so do check - or join the RREC. You know you've always wanted a £5000 Silver Spirit...

What are the limitations on your defender policy? Miles? Days? More?

No, I'm not in a Land Rover Club - my interest in 4x4s is more to do with their towing legality than mud-plugging. This Defender replaces a

300tdi Range Rover auto, which was a wonderful car while its airbag light wasn't on and when its heater didn't leak. I've spent far longer repairing the Defender (110CSW diesel) than driving it, and now it might need outriggers for its MoT, I might give up and sell it as it is. 3000 miles/yr, business use, 3 drivers, no limit on days used.
