I count myself fortunate to have been living overseas for the whole of the 70s. Looks like it was Britain's shittiest decade ever.

where I got the link for the TV programmes from.

I am sure my Grandma once mentioned the 40's were worse than the 70's.

I unforget the 60s as being a time of looking forwards, then the 70s were downhill all the way, except that I didn't notice much as I left home in '76, before which it was Dad's problem, and the joys of floating living negated the worst of the strikes in the last few years of the decade.

Then of course, the 80s arrived... I had my longest ever period of unemployment in '84. Six weeks of boredom and worry. Even the dog wasn't happy.

Ahh you should have been here.

the 70's were a great time for me thought eh rolling power cuts and petrol shortages did cause the occasional problems.

I recall I bought a new car in 1973 and part-exchanged it in1976 for more than I had paid for it.

As a young driver it had had a couple of little mishaps: driving through fences, that kind of thing and how can I forget the joys of filling rusted through wings and taking off cylinder heads to give it a decoke?

Seriously I *did* have a great time in the 70's; despite the problems of the time it did seem to be an age of great hopes that were often fulfilled.

Am I the only one that knows that Britain has been bankrupt since the end of WW2?

I would have thought that every persons favourite decade would be the decade where you lost your virginity.

So long ago I can't remember whether it was 60s or 70s. In my case best decades were 90s for long overdue clubbing after a disastrous first marriage and the noughties for getting together with my 2nd wife. Then again in the 10s we are both (early) retired and having a great time.

Technically, Britain isn't bankrupt at the moment, as we are owed about

100 Billion dollars more by other contries than we owe them.

Unless you're talking about moral bankruptcy, in which case it started in the 1920s, according to some, and the 1960s according to others.

I was! First redundancy 1970. 2 weeks unpaid holiday and the NI wrote complaining there were 2 stamps missing from my card! Followed by 2 years employed by a shipbuilder. Yes, I know. About as far from the sea as you can get.

I remember lots of broken Minis on the drive of our first house. My uncle had kindly gifted me a 1956 series II Morgan which by 1971 required a new chassis and rebuild. If anyone needs to know how to make a chassis for a Morgan, I can help.

I must err on the Dennis side of driving as I have, so far, avoided any significant incidents.

Me too. Two children, two if not three houses. Inflation was galloping along and house moves essential to keep up. A full time engineering job and propping up an ailing family farm did not leave much time for frivolities.

You mean it lasted that long?

I left at the end and emigrated. Id had enough bloody socialism to last a lifetime.

So I missed Thatcher and Charles and Di by and large.

Ditto; it wasn't that bad at all, and most of the moaning bastards who put it down as a decade to forget simply have a political axe to grind. Same as those wankers who trot out the cliche about the 60s - most of them weren't there anyway.

I think te 70's were, for whatever reason, near enough hell as to make no difference, for me. With one or two brighter spots.

Wasn't it the 1980s when Thatcher said it was OK to do do anything you could get away with to succeed. She was heading for a huge election defeat until she manufactured the Falklands War.

A friend of mine is emigrating next week.

To Azerbaijan. Really.

Seems a bit excessive, just to see the Eurovision Song Contest! .-)
