How come the Apple stores don;t suffer this sort of thing ?

I'm guess it;'s because they dont; sell other peoles products, perhaps other retails could follow.. i,e

LG, sony could all have high street shops and sell at the same price store or on-line. Trouble is those companies also want to seel quickely and in bulk to places like amazon perhaps if they stopped that.....

Sony do have high street shops (or at least they used to).

In general their prices don't even match the best obtainable on the high street, they don't come near online offerings.

As do B&O, Panasonic. All three are close together in Leeds

But they do provide a nice warm place where you can look at the newest kit and be completely outnumbered by bored sales assistants.

Are they actually owned by Sony? Or simply called Sony Centres (or whatever the name is/was)?

I note that our John Lewis now has a special Samsung stand in their computer/pad section - not quite as big as the Apple section, but very noticeable.

Well, Apple has fans of the brand itself. It's hard to imagine anyone saying, "Hey, let's see what new stuff this Sony/LG shop has!"

When you need a new TV, you're more likely to say "let's go look at TVs" (i.e., to a shop that sells them) than "let's go look at Sony/LG products" (a shop that sells that brand, including a few TVs).

They seem to allow people to buy from Sony online to pick up at local Sony Centre. I suspect that the online model has messed up their old simple franchise - anyone know more?

Aple seem to be showing teh way ahead here make a product that peole are actually willing to spend money on and sell it both on-line and in yuor own stores and you'll make money.

There are at least three versions of the 'one brand' store/concession:

a, The whole thing is run by the company eg the major Apple stores. These are primarily a prestige showroom, they may show a profit on the retail sales, but that is probably the result of creative accounting.

b, It is a franchise: the operator has to make it pay, but will be assisted by special deals from the brand owner in exchange for offering only one brand.

c, Product placement, the retailer gets lots of signage etc from the brand to make a feature display. If the retailer is important enough, the brand may be paying the retailer for the space etc.

As well as the space, there's the issue of who pays for the signage, and even who pays for the extra staff to work the signed area.
